Walks Greenspaces and Countryside
Battlefield Heritage Park - "Battlefield Heritage Park is the site of the Battle of Shrewsbury fought between King Henry IV and the rebel Henry Percy " " For most part, the paths are well-surfaced across a level gradient. During wet weather visitors may find that in some areas the paths are rough, uneven and narrow. There are a number of gates to negotiate along the trails and the kissing gate at the entrance may restrict wheelchair users." - from the Phototrails website
Carding Mill Valley - (NT) - "We've got miles of footpaths, bridleways and permissive paths to explore across the Long Mynd. There are walks available for all abilities and time scales, so you can chose to go on a short walk up to the reservoir or a much longer walk to the highest point on the hill and back." "Mobility parking - separate free parking, Grounds - partly accessible, 1:20 gradient in places, Building - level entrance. Ground floor accessible, Easy access toilets inside the tearoom" - from the National Trust website
Donington and Albrighton Local Nature Reserve- We understand that most sections of paths are suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs - "There are opportunities for beautiful walks on hard-surfaced paths through St. Cuthbert’s Meadow, fishing on the scenic Donington Pool and wildlife watching. The historic St. Cuthbert’s well also sits within the site, a listed monument" from the Shropshires Great Outdoors website
Haughmond Hill - "Explore Haughmond Hill and follow in the footsteps of history. Follow the trails out to the front of the hill for commanding views across the River Severn and Shrewsbury to the South Shropshire and Welsh hills beyond. Discover the Iron Age enclosure or visit the viewing platform over the quarry; a must for any budding geologists or anyone who likes dumper trucks!" "Accessible toilet, Easy access trail" - from the Forestry England website
Download the Haughmond Hill Trails leaflet from the Forestry England website
Lythwood Parr's Pool - "Parr's Pool is a secret beauty spot which is well worth a visit. Located in the village of Bayston Hill, just a few miles south of Shrewsbury, the pool is surrounded by broadleaf woodland and is accessed by a well-surfaced path which is suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and mobility vehicles. Parking, however, is limited, and as this is a residential area visitors are asked not to block access to residents property" from the Phototrails website
Monkmoor Community Woodland - "Monkmoor Community Woodland is a 2 hectare site in Shrewsbury. The site sits in between a residential area and the River Severn and is a popular 'through-route' for walkers on the Severn Way. There is no designated parking available so visitors will need to park on the street - either on Cosely Avenue or Galton Drive" - from the Phototrails website
Onny Meadows - "These riverside water meadows lie behind our Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre, overlooked by Norton Camp, our neighbouring hill fort. The Onny Meadows’ surfaced paths provide access to the fields and pools via a wheelchair accessible viewing platform. In Spring and Summer the pools are alive with wildlife. Other unsurfaced paths range further and explore the banks of the River Onny. The hard-packed, generally level, surfaced paths provide a half-mile (700m) circuit. In very wet weather the paths can be boggy in places but are generally good. The circuit includes access to a pond viewing platform. At our popular visitor spot, Kingfisher Corner, you will find a wheelchair friendly picnic bench to enjoy your lunch whilst you enjoy the peaceful meander of the River Onny. Mown paths along the river bank are best tackled in summer when dry." - from the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre website
Severn Valley Country Park - "Green Flag award-winning Severn Valley Country Park offers 126 acres of beautiful accessible countryside" "Our purpose built easy access trail is designed especially for wheelchairs and pushchairs" "We have lots of family picnic benches scattered throughout the park" "Ample car parking including spaces for motor cycles, coaches and Blue Badge Holders." - from the Shropshires Great Outdoors website
Stanmore Country Park - "100 acres of woodland and meadows on the site of an old RAF camp. A level site with wheelchair accessible gates ideal for the disabled or elderly." - from the Shropshire's Great Outdoors website
The Stiperstones - All Ability Trail - "The 500m all ability trail starts at the main car park " "The needs of wheelchair users and people with visually impaired have been well-considered here, as plenty of rest areas and a tapping-rail have been provided along the course of the path. Visitors should note that the condition of the path deteriorates somewhat after the end of the all-ability trail. The site is very exposed, so be warned: the weather is often extreme! Toilet and refreshment facilities can be found in local villages, including disabled toilets in the nearby village of Snailbeach." - from the Phototrails website
The Mere Ellesmere - "For almost their entire length, the paths around the Mere are surfaced, broad and well maintained making this a very easy place to explore. A broad surfaced path leads from the Moors car park adjacent to the Shrewsbury to Ellesmere Road. From here you can follow the side of the Mere for almost a mile (1.1km) past the Visitor Centre, along the Promenade into the restored Victorian Cremorne Gardens. The final section of undulating path beyond the first gate to The Crimps, although once surfaced, is now soft and narrow in places." - from the Shropshire's Great Outdoors website
Walkmill Meadows - Market Drayton - "Situated just a couple of miles from Market Drayton town centre, Walkmill Meadows is a beautiful 6 hectare country park that sits against the banks of the River Tern. Apart from one minor gradient near the entrance, Walkmill Meadows has otherwise flat and reasonably well surfaced paths, and several benches along the 1km path." - from the Phototrails website
The Shropshire's Great Outdoors website - has many walks listed and a filter feature for 'Easy access' walks - we have listed a few but the site has many more and well worth a visit.
